Memorial Day: Honoring the Fallen
A Day of Remembrance and Gratitude
Understanding Memorial Day
Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, is a day dedicated to honoring and remembering the brave men and women who have died while serving in the United States military.
The origins of Memorial Day can be traced back to the Civil War era. After the war, a group of women in Columbus, Mississippi, decorated the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers to show their respect and gratitude for the sacrifices made by all who fought.
In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday, and it has since become a day of solemn reflection and remembrance across the country.
