Earthquakes Strike New Zealand, Triggering Tsunami Warnings
Multiple Tremors Felt Across the North and South Islands
A series of earthquakes, including one measuring 49 magnitude, have struck New Zealand's North and South Islands. The strongest tremor was felt 70 km southwest of Waverley in the North Island at 16:48 pm local time, with an epicenter approximately 83 km deep.
Thousands of people across the country have reported feeling the quake, which was followed by several aftershocks. Geonet, the New Zealand seismic monitoring agency, has issued tsunami warnings for the coastal areas of the North Island, although these have since been lifted.
In the South Island, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck Canterbury tonight at 9:21 pm near the township of Culverden. Over 4,600 people have reported experiencing the sharp jolt.
A larger earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 occurred near Wellington at 8 pm on Wednesday, but no significant damage or injuries have been reported thus far.
The series of earthquakes serves as a reminder of New Zealand's vulnerability to seismic activity. The country lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped region that accounts for approximately 90% of the world's earthquakes.
